Yesterday West Sussex County Council released a statement from Darren Faulkner, principal engineer for West Sussex County Council, saying the road would be open on Thursday afternoon - five days ahead of schedule.

Town centre traders have reported a drop in sales while the works have been on as many rely on people coming in by bus.

At 4.30pm on Thursday, the contractors were still hard at work, but Mr Faulkner has stood by his word. He said: “I have just spoken with the contractor and they have assured me the works will be completed this afternoon. They have got some cutting of the blocks left to do and they are doing this now.

“It is likely to be the latter part of the afternoon.”

The County Council has completed an £80,000 scheme to make the town centre safer for the public.

Three pedestrian ramps in Carfax, outside Waitrose, Nationwide Building Society and Waterstones, have been reconstructed and repaired.

The Causeway and Blackhorse Way has also been resurfaced.
