Spokeswoman Christina Casey said: “Attila, who has West Sussex roots, will be supported by two other poets Janine Booth and Speech Painter (aka Geoff Allnutt who is local to Midhurst), and the evening will be punctuated with a burst of amazing drumming from Drum Nation Tribe.

“This special night is part of a nationwide tour by Attila celebrating and promoting publication of his new autobiography Arguments Yard  and part of the South Downs Poetry Festival, a brand-new annual festival of poetry and spoken word taking place between July 16 and 24. This festival is uniquely spread across the beautiful countryside of the South Downs National Park, and will feature many other performance events over two weeks and a full three days of poetry workshops (Poetry Day in Lewes July 16 and The Big Weekend, July 22- 24) for those keen to develop their own writing.

“Attila himself is far more than a poet. Launched into public consciousness by the Radio One DJ John Peel in the early 1980s, he is renowned for his animated performance and passionate delivery of his work, and also as a musician, journalist and political activist.

“He has spent 35 years touring the world, performing more than 3,000 gigs in 24 countries, releasing 40 albums/CDs and seven books of poetry along the way, and last September his autobiography, Arguments Yard, was published by Cherry Red Books. This show takes this latest work to the stage: a mixture of poems, songs and passages from the book, with words to make you laugh, cry and seethe with anger, all in one evening.

Other poets participating in the South Downs Poetry Festival include: Andrew McMillan, Jonathan Edwards, Maggie Sawkins, Stephanie Norgate, Jackie Wills, Hugh Dunkerley, Brendan Cleary, John Haynes, Hilda Sheehan, John Greening, Penelope Shuttle, John Davies, Janet Sutherland, Matthew Caley and Peter Sutton.

All events can be attended singly, or as part of a day or weekend ticket booking. Visit www.ticketsource.co.uk/southdownspoetryfestival.
