Gardening expertise shared

Writer and broadcaster Anne Swithinbank, a regular member of the panel on Gardeners’ Question Time, will be sharing her expertise with an audience at West Dean College.

Anne said: “I can’t remember a time when I wasn’t interested in gardening. I even looked after the school greenhouse. I just wandered in one day and started caring for the cacti and geraniums. I think the lab technicians were delighted!”

She will be giving a talk entitled Under Cover on Saturday, June 4 from 2-3.30pm.

Anne will be lifting the lid on the benefits and skills for growing under cover.

“Any kind of cover can revolutionise your gardening. You’ll find you can steal a march on time and soil conditions by raising young vegetable plants in pots and modules for planting out later.

Anne will explore aspects of looking after crops under cover from tender crops such as tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and passion fruits that might spend their whole lives under glass to how temperature and light can affect your plants.

After the talk, there will be an opportunity for questions and to explore West Dean’s Kitchen garden, which features many plants thriving under cover. Includes Cream tea at 3.30pm.
