Crawley singer Martyn celebrates 25th album

In a special concert, Crawley-born folk singer and guitarist Martyn Wyndham-Read celebrates the issue of his 25th album, Starlit Skies, and his 50th year as a professional singer.

He will perform songs from the new album accompanied by No Man’s Band (Iris Bishop on duet concertina and accordion, Gary Holder on double bass and tuba, John Wigg on fiddle and Joy Lewis on hammer dulcimer).

Members of the band also sing and play in other groups so with the addition of singer Marilyn Bennett and multi instrumentalist Derek Hughes you can also enjoy music from The Other Band and Joy Lewis and Derek Hughes.

In his late teens Martyn left his mother’s farm in Sussex and headed off, with his guitar, to Australia where he worked on a sheep station.

It was while he was there that he heard, first hand, the old songs sung by some of the station hands and became captivated by these songs and the need to know more of them and where they came from grew.
He headed off to Melbourne and became part of the folk song revival there and throughout Australia during the early 1960s.

Back in England in 1967 he met up with the renowned singer and song collector Bert Lloyd. Martyn was asked by Bert to be part of the album ‘Leviathan’ on the Topic label and soon after he started recording for Bill Leader and touring extensively worldwide.

In the early 1970s Martyn started the Maypoles to Mistletoe concerts which portray the seasons of the year through song, music, dance and verse and illustration and are regularly performed at The Hawth.
