Martin, of Walberton, explained: “I and my partner Karen are tours guides in Arundel. Seven years ago I started Arundel Historic Tours.

“As a postman and growing up in Arundel, seeing thousands of tourists leaving the town knowing very little about it, I started a 2pm turn up and go walking tour – all the whys and wherefores expanded into presentations and a second tour.”

He started catering for coaches, Euro student groups, tourism-related students, tour guides from other parts of the world and the daily visitors and overnight stayers, locals, new people moving to the town and special requests for combined tours that have included other businesses across the town.

“General books about Arundel are few and those aimed at tourists even fewer. So, to create a book aimed primarily at tourists was my aim.”

Arundel, a Postman’s View is self-published and is available from various outlets across the town at £5.

The aim is “to give the visitors something to take away with them, to point them towards the many interesting buildings and architecture that are away from the High Street; and to inform, educate and inspire, to see the love we have living and being part of our town.”

Martin added: “I grew up, worked, played and lived a good part of my life in Arundel.

“My mum still lives here as do other family members.

“My inspiration for the book was the support, interest, reviews and pushing by everyone who has toured or seen my presentation. Writing the book or compiling the guest pages has been good – great pieces included in the book written by local people, pieces relating to their own work and memories in the town, past and present.

“It took me a while to create the cover, many corrections and re-dos.

“Once that was agreed with my partner Karen, the book sequence was quite simple. The hardest part was leaving many things out of it.

“ Keeping it to a tourism price, a bit more than a postcard but less than a major book, having it printed in large print, meant fewer words, so all the information and no waffle.

“This was going to be a one-off, but there will be a part two. Information about that will be in this book.

“Buy one and you will find out about it.”
