Best band in town

Paul Lacey’s Back To Basie Orchestra were voted Best Big Band at the British Jazz Awards in 2005, 2006, 2008 and 2009.

With their award-winning vocalist Jacqui Hicks, they will bring their new show, Swingin’ The Blues – Basie Style, to Worthing’s Pavilion Theatre, Worthing, on Saturday, April 9 at 7.30pm.

The band is one of the country’s top Count Basie tribute orchestras, directed by trumpet player Paul Lacey and featuring session musicians and jazz soloists dedicated to playing the music of Count Basie’s second great orchestra of the 1950s and 1960s.

Launched in 2001, Back To Basie have presented Count Basie tribute concerts throughout Europe.

Singer Jacqui has worked with the jazz/funk band Shakatak, both as backing vocalist and sax player and appears on their albums Let The Piano Play, View From The City, Under Your Spell, Blue Savannah, Beautiful Day and the MOBO-nominated Live At Ronnie Scott’s. She has also worked with the Latin/Pop band Matt Bianco, is a featured vocalist on Paprika Soul’s 2002 album Into The Light and released her own album Spellbound in 2000.

Among the many Count Basie favourites Back To Basie will perform are Makin’ Whoopee, My Kind Of Town, Wee Small Hours, Magic Flea and Doin’ Basie’s Thing as well as tracks from their most recent album Corner Pocket including I Left My Heart In San Francisco and One O’Clock Jump.
