A COUNCILLOR facing sex abuse charges has been wished well for the future by colleagues before he quits his role in May.
Mark McCarthy, 36, was presented with a book about Worthing by mayor Heather Mercer at the last full council meeting before the elections on May 1.

Lib Dem councillor Hazel Thorpe was among several of Mr McCarthy's colleagues who spoke to him at Tuesday's (March 25) full council meeting.

Cllr Thorpe said she acknowledged he had had a hard time and told him she "hoped his future would be better for him".

The Offington ward representative is charged with two counts of indecently assaulting a child under one and is currently awaiting trial at Oxford Crown Court.

He is faces a charge of being drunk and disorderly and is due to appear at Worthing Magistrates' Court on Monday (March 31).

See the Herald on Thursday, April 3, for more on the councillors stepping down after many years' service.
