This year’s Big Nibble event in Horsham town centre will take place today and tomorrow (Saturday and Sunday September 1 and 2) and will showcase the culinary talents of eleven local chefs as well as food and drink producers.

The demonstrations are part of ‘The Big Nibble – A Slice of Sussex’ event celebrations; the now renowned local food and drink extravaganza, organised by Horsham District Council in conjunction with Horsham Markets.

The ‘Live Food Show’, as it has been appropriately renamed this year, takes place on Saturday September 1 with a demonstration kitchen called ‘The Live Cookery Theatre’ arriving in Horsham to take pride of place in the Carfax opposite Panino Café in the town centre.

The high spec kitchen will be used on the big day by a number of chefs from local businesses, plus traders from Horsham’s weekly local produce market that will collectively form a live programme of entertainment so the chefs can showcase their culinary skills, demonstrate and share their knowledge.

Gourmets have a good reason to be excited as celebrity chef Tony Tobin will be making a special appearance on the Saturday in the Carfax to browse stalls across the market and cook up something rather special at the kitchen using selected local produce.

Tony is well known to viewers of the BBC’s Ready Steady Cook TV programme, having appeared on the show over 300 times since 1992.

Matt Gillan, head chef of The Pass restaurant at South Lodge Hotel in Lower Beeding, which has now won its first Michelin Star, will also be returning to the event. As well as some familiar faces, there will also be new demonstrators taking to the ‘Big Nibble Stage’ in Horsham for the very first time.

This cookery spectacular is one of the most highly anticipated elements of the Big Nibble weekend, with local produce being used as part of each demonstration process, coinciding with the strong overall theme and ethos of the event.

The programme is professionally compered by foodie Hilary Knight, founder of Sussex Food and Drink Network. Hilary works with chefs and food and drink producers from across Sussex and will be engaging with the public and interacting with demonstrators on the day, teasing out their top tips.

Whilst visitors will witness cooking at its very best, there will certainly be opportunities for free tasters together with takeaway recipe sheets for many of the dishes so visitors can practise the experience for themselves.

Roger Paterson, Horsham District Council cabinet member for the local economy, said: “Calling all would be Masterchefs! Come to Horsham’s Big Nibble to see real life Masterchefs in action at the Live Cookery Theatre’s free cookery demonstrations.

“There’s no question that this is going to be the best Nibble event ever with so many of our brilliant local food and drink stallholders offering a wonderful selection of delicious products.

“Come along on Saturday September 1 and Sunday September 2 and prepare to give your taste buds a treat!”
