With its stunning views and its even more magnificent architecture, Nutfield Priory epitomised the height of luxurious living for its wealthy Victorian owners.
Its gothic splendour was inspired by the Houses of Parliament - its architect John Gibson assisted the Westminster designs - and it could not have been a more fitting abode for an industrialist who was also an MP.
But Joshua Fielden MP who commissioned this great dwelling was a social reformer too as well as being very much a family man. There is a real sense that these priorities are imbued in this fantastic structure.
That sense of intimacy is reflected in its cloisters, now a restaurant with breathtaking views across the Surrey countryside.
Today, Nutfield Priory is as hospitable and welcoming as its Victorian owners could have hoped.
An hotel and spa, it aspires to make every guest feel special. That ethos was reflected in the hand-written note of welcome that awaited us from general manager Simon Barker as well as a personalised message iced in white chocolate on a plate of sweets and fruit.
The staff clearly share that imperative of treating each guest with individuality and warmth. Customer service was exceptionally good.
It’s not an easy challenge.
When we visited, the hotel was busy - it caters not just for individuals seeking an escape to an oasis of luxurious calm. Business conferences, weddings, and parties are all part of the mix that ensures hotels like this can remain vibrant businesses.
The menu too cleverly combined a sense of the traditional with a presentation that was both contemporary and imaginative.
Nutfield Priory is not just made special by architecture or history.
The dream is kept alive day in and day out by staff who show they care and management determined to make it a memorable stay or visit for all the right reasons.
