Motionhouse bring Scattered to Worthing

Celebrated for productions rooted in dance, theatre, circus, acrobatics and film, the award-winning Motionhouse revives Scattered, one of its biggest successes, for a date in Worthing (Connaught Theatre, Wednesday, March 8, 7.30pm).

As artistic director and choreographer Kevin Finnan explains, the piece is the first in a triptych.

“Scattered has been a phenomenal show for us, and we are very proud of it. It’s a show that really opened up a new chapter for us. It’s extremely visual. It’s a real mix of dance and digital and really extreme physicality. It has been a great success for us. It goes back eight or nine years, and it has toured the world twice over. It has done London, New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Italy, France, Holland, Germany and Denmark. It has been incredibly successful, and we are just about to start the third piece in the triptych. The second part was Broken which we did about three or four years ago. I am just now starting the third part which is called Charge.

“The three shows look at the human condition in relation to the world in which we live. Scattered is a show about water and our relationship to water, particularly in the west, in the world of plumbing where we don’t really think about water unless we turn the tap on and nothing comes out or if there is a flood. It is a piece about the impact of water on our lives.

“Having done water, I decided to do a show about our relationship to earth, to the ground on which we stand. That became Broken. And the third one, Charge, is about our relationship as human beings to energy. We would not be having this conversation now if it weren’t for electrical energy!

“After that, I am changing. I am going to do a show about artificial intelligence. It is sinister, and it is not. Artificial intelligence is growing everywhere without us noticing, in the way cars tells us where to go and so on. It’s a very, very interesting field. I am doing research into robotics at the moment.

“And that’s the fantastic thing about dance, that it is very, very visual. It is extremely fast. Language is no barrier. If the movement is interesting and dynamic, then there are no cultural barriers either. It is like a lingua franca. We are very much about making shows that are extremely visual and dynamic. Those are aspects that are very important for us.

“Scattered is a great family night out for audiences of all ages and dance experience. A company of seven professional dancers bring Scattered to life, against a backdrop of entrancing digital imagery, in an extraordinary interaction between film and live performance. Seven dancers delve into the majesty and savagery of water, plunging into an ocean, tumbling down a waterfall and sliding on an avalanche to a frozen landscape of arctic beauty.

“Our aim at Motionhouse is to produce exciting and enjoyable shows. We want our audiences to be stimulated and moved by our work.”

Motionhouse is supported using public funding by the National Lottery through Arts Council England. Scattered premiered in 2009 and was originally commissioned by Warwick Arts Centre, with support from Playbox Theatre. Founded in 1988, Motionhouse is based in Leamington Spa and tours to theatres and festivals at home and around the world. Kevin was choreographer and movement director for the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.
