PM’s car to go under auction

A 1971 Fiat 500 L, which was once owned by Prime Minister David Cameron, is back on the “campaign trail”, thanks to Silverstone Auctions.

The fully restored car has been estimated by the specialist auction house at being worth between £8,000 to £12,000.

It will go under the hammer on November 17, at the Footman James Classic Motor Show at the NEC.

It was bought by David Cameron, in 1998, as a surprise birthday present for his wife, Samantha, and the Camerons only covered around 1,000 miles in the 10 years that they owned it.

Nick Whale, managing director at Silverstone Auctions, said: “No matter what your political persuasion, this is one cool car and we are delighted to be able to offer it for auction at our sale, in November, as part of the Footman James Classic Motor Show weekend.

“After all, it’s not every day that you get the chance to bid for a car that was once owned by a global figure.

“Our auction, which also contains other classics, modern supercars and competition cars, really does offer the chance to own a slice of automotive history.”

Apart from its fascinating past, the car has plenty to offer in its own right.

It is believed to have covered just 13,000 miles from new and has been restored to standard specification by the current owner, which included stripping the entire vehicle and replacing any part that required attention.

“David Cameron has his hands full on many fronts, not least with his party conference, so I’m unsure that our auction will be at the top of his agenda.

“However, for one lucky new owner this stylish little Fiat will offer many years of happy motoring, whilst also being a genuine investment because of its illustrious history,” added Nick.
