POLICE have released dramatic CCTV footage of an armed robbery at a Henfield bank.

The video shows the man walk into Barclays Bank, in Henfield High Street, with what police believe is a gun, collect money from a cashier, spill some cash on the floor and walk out again.

Police are investigating possible sightings of the armed robber.

Villagers reacted with shock after armed police descended on the village in search of the man who left the bank with a substantial amount of money and disappeared.

He was last seen walking towards Henfield Library after the robbery at 2.30pm on Tuesday afternoon.

Staff and customers in the bank were shocked but otherwise unhurt.

Police scrambled a helicopter and sniffer dogs in the hunt for the man who is described as white, of small build and with a dirty complexion.

He was wearing dark trousers and dark shoes, a knee-length dark coloured coat with a hood and a shoulder length bag across his chest.

Police have been contacted with a report of a man, of a similar description, walking on the road near a pub in Woodmancote at around 6.50am on Tuesday August 29.

Police have also been approached by people who believe they saw the same man in Henfield before the robbery.

Investigators have asked for this man to come forward to eliminate him from their enquiries.

When the robber entered the bank he was wearing white or transluscent gloves.

Police said it was possible he discarded the gloves and they have appealed for anyone who may have found them to get in touch.

DI Jo Banks said: "We are examining the scene and are talking to witnesses inside and outside the bank.

"There were a number of people in the area at the time and if witnesses have not spoken with the police yet we would urge them to come forward.

"They can talk to detectives on 0845 60 70 999."

DS Pierre Serra said: "Witnesses in the bank are shaken but otherwise uninjured.

"They, along with other witnesses, are helping us with our enquiries.

"Searches have been made by police dogs, armed police and the force helicopter.

"Forensic evidence has been gathered from the scene and our investigation continues."
