Sussex ram home their advantage

Derbyshire 242 all out & 12-2 Sussex 576-3 dec Stumps

SUSSEX created history today as the top four batsmen scored centuries in their LV County Championship Division 2 match against Derbyshire.

Chris Nash (156), Ed Joyce (164), Ben Brown (112) and Murray Goodwin (100 not out) punished the Derbyshire bowling attack before Sussex declared on 576-3, in reply to 242.

It is the first time the top four have achieved such a feat, and it has put the home side into a commanding position going into the third day at Horsham's Cricketfield Road.

On a miserable day for Derbyshire, Corey Collymore took two quick wickets in the evening session to leave them 27-2, 307 runs short of making Sussex bat again.

4th over. Wicket. What a non-contest this is. Corey Collymore snares his second wicket of the over as Chesney Hughes plays on.

4th over. Wicket. A pretty miserable match for Peter Borrington is completed with innings of 2 and 1, Corey Collymore invites the edge and Ollie Rayner pouches the catch at second slip.

Derbyshire begin their second innings. Wayne Madsen and Peter Borrington charged with opening up against an eager Sussex bowling attack.

Century and declaration. Murray Goodwin steals a quick single to reach his century which proceeds a declaration at 576-3.

Sussex will have 20 overs at their visitors before the close of play.

A real fact to savour here, it's the first time the top four Sussex atsmen have all hit centuries.

111th over: Wicket. The third wicket to fall is Ben Brown as he goes in search of another big blow. Caught by the back pedalling Robin Peterson off Greg Smith

109th over: 100 partnership. Brown and Goodwin race past the century partnership as Goodwin starts to open his shoulders - expect a declaration anytime soon.

106th over: Century, 50 and 500 up. Almost constant applause ringing out around Cricketfield Road. A wide from Mark Footitt brings up the Sussex 500, and next ball Ben Brown squeezes him away for four to bring up his century.

Two balls later, Murray Goodwin finds the rope for his half century

103rd over: 50 partnership. Yet another boundary brings up the 50 partnership between Brown and Goodwin.

Play resumes: We could see a bit of a thrash and a declaration in this session, and Sussex will hope the rain holds off tomorrow...

Tea Sussex are in a commanding position here as Brown (85) and Goodwin (19) stroll off at tea, with their side on 457-2.

97th over: 450 up. Ben Brown is closing in on his century as he and Murray Goodwin increase the lead to 210.

91st over: Wicket. Ed Joyce gets squared up by Greg Smith, and he feathers an edge behind to perish on 164.

First time any Derbyshire bowler has looked menacing today.

84th and 85th over: 100 partnership, Joyce 150 and 400 up.

The landmarks keep on coming, three in quick succession as Sussex continue to stretch their lead. Ed Joyce reaches his 150 with a slightly streaky flay which flies away fine for four.

76th over: Fifty. Ben Brown square cuts to Robin Peterson and finds the cover boundary for his seventh four. Just 46 balls to reach the half century.

70th over: 50 Partnership. Ed Joyce and Ben Brown are scoring at a serene pace as they pass the 50 run stand for the second wicket. Brown has made more headway, closing in on a half century.

Play resumes: Could be some more leather chasing in store for Derbyshire....

61st over: New batsman Ben Brown wastes no time in getting into the swing of things and two crashing boundaries see him settle at the crease immediately.

60th over: Wicket. At last, a breakthrough for Derbyshire, as Chris Nash slaps a delivery from Robin Peterson straight at Jonathan Clare at point.

Nash 156, c Clare, b Peterson

58th over: 150. These two continue their inexorable march, Chris Nash cuts left arm spinner Robin Petersen for four bringing up his 150.

Play resumes: That didn't last long, the covers were on for all of five minutes.

57th over: Rain stops play

Those ominous clouds have finally started to come down, although with a strong breeze from the south, could blow over pretty sharpish.

53rd over: Record. Chris Nash clears the ropes for the first six of the day as Sussex surpass the biggest Championship opening partnership on this ground, beating the previous best of 258.

52nd over: 250 partnership. Ed Joyce gets a thick edge to Greg Smith, but it's enough to run an easy single to take Sussex past 250 - Derbyshire's mood appears as black as the clouds building up around Cricketfield Road.

51st over: Century. Ed Joyce joins Nash by passing 100 with a neat cut through point, beating Steffan Jones' dive to reach the boundary.

This partnership is now by far the biggest Sussex have ever enjoyed against Derbyshire.

38th over: Century. Chris Nash realises a childhood dream as he punches Jonathan Clare through the covers for successive boundaries bringing up his century.

It's his first ton for Sussex on the ground he grew up watching and playing cricket - and took just 15 minutes this morning to score the 19 runs needed.

GOOD morning and welcome to Cricketfield Road in Horsham for day two of the LV County Championship Division 2 clash between Susex and Derbyshire.

The home side will be looking to press home their advantage after openers Ed Joyce and Chris Nash took them to within 72 runs of Derbyshire's first innings total last night.
