Sussex win rain hit CB40 match against Somerset

SUSSEX have ended Somerset's unbeaten run in the CB40 with a rain-affected win at Horsham.

SUSSEX have ended Somerset's unbeaten run in the CB40 with a rain-affected win at Horsham.

With the 1.45pm start delayed by three hours and the format reduced to a 20 over game, Somerset were put in and openers Marcus Trescothick and Craig Kieswetter raced to a century in eight overs.

Kieswetter went for 45 but Pete Trego hit 50 from 21 balls, but when he and Trescothick (67) fell Sussex took regular wickets and were happy to limit the group leaders to 216/7.

After a slow start Sussex began to find the runs, Ed Joyce making 35, but it was the 91-run fifth wicket partership from skipper Yardy (66 not out) and Joe Gatting (25) made the difference.

With the rain coming down the umpires stopped play after 15 overs and under the Duckworth Lewis scoring Sussex won by 17 runs to boost their semi-final hopes in the competition and end a good week at Horsham.

15th over: Kartik gives just three in a tight over, Sussex moving towards their total.... Oh and the umpires have seen enough with the rain pouring down. Sussex win by Duckworth Lewis by 17 runs.

14th over: 50. Yardy missiles another lusty blow for six at long off and that brings up 50. The skipper got there in just 24 balls, including 8 fours and three sixes. He sends Thomas into the air again, Kartik is under it but on the stretch he slips, crashes into the advertsiing boards as the ball drops over for six. The next ball he's dropped on the rope at long leg, it was high and in these conditions it's not easy for the fielders out there.

13th over: A Thomas bouncer elludes his keeper and makes a splash as it bounces on it's way for four, much to the delight of the very vocal Sussex crowd. Gatting shows great touch to guide the ball off his bat for six at the third man boundary. Yardy with a six to move on to 49.

12th over: Yardy smacks Trego for three successive fours as the fielding and bowling conditions continue to deteriorate.

Sussex 134/4 (Yardy 41*)

11th over: The rain is really coming down, the brollies have sprung up all around the ground and the light is fading.

Sussex 124/4.

10th over: Gatting straight into his rhythm. Flicking one over the keeper, then running up two. A fumble on the boundary gives him another four and he gets another with a fierce drive down the ground.

Sussex 114/4.

9th over: New man Joe Gatting lobs over the two at cover and then finish's Zander De Bruyn's over by top edging a bouncer over the keeper for four. And the rain is starting to fall...

Sussex 91/4.

8th over: WICKET: New man Chris Nash fires a four to long on and he could be crucial to Sussex's chances. No, actually he can't because the next ball he's gone, swinging and missing as Trego's delivery clips the top of his stumps.

Sussex 88/4.

7th over: WICKET, WICKET. Goodwin is caught for 13 by Buttler at deep square leg as the spin of Kartik instantly pays off with his first ball. And he has another, Joyce stepping forward and missing one that nipped back outside his off stump and Kieswetter takes his stumps for 35. Yardy in to end the over with a four to long on.

Sussex 78/3.

6th over: Joyce looks to be carrying his good County Championship form, using the pace of the ball to guide it behind for a six and then aiming over the two men in the covers who can't stop the boundary.

5th over: Streaky boundary from Joyce, his bottom edge whizzes past his own stumps for four off the bowling of Thomas. Joyce slightly miss times a shot but his arial shot is just out of reach of the fielder and good running between the wicket produces two.

4th over: New man Murray Goodwin gets off the mark by firing a huge six straight back over bowler Mark Phillip's head. He chops a yorker through square leg for four and then hooks another boundary down the leg side. Not the best bowling from Phillips, that's the end of the first powerplay.

Sussex 52/1 (Joyce 22*)

3rd over: WICKET. Mark Turner bowling. The first ball beats and keeper for four, the next Wright spanks for Sussex's first six, and the third he lobs over the covers for another boundary. But the next ball he's gone, tempted into another big one he's caught by Thomas on the rope. Ed Joyce though hits two lovely strokes to the boundary and that's 22 from the over.

Sussex 29/1

2nd over: Ben Phillips bowls. Sussex take another seven runs.

1st over: Ed Joyce and Luke Wright open the bat, Alfonso Thomas starts with the ball for Somerset. A two and a single from the first four balls. Oh Wright is a very lucky boy, his edge behind just passing the dive of Trescothick at slip to race to the boundary.

Sussex 7/0

SOMERSET have scored 216/7 from their 20 overs in this rain-interupted reduced overs CB40 match at Horsham.

Sussex will be happy to have limited them to that after an explosive start from Marcus Trescothick and Craig Kieswetter, who made a century for the opening wicket with a series of sixes and boundaries.

When Kieswetter fell for 45 Pete Trego made 50 from 21 balls but when he was dismissed Sussex made regular breakthroughs, Trescothick the crucial wicket for 67.

Sussex dropped three good catching chances but tightened as wickets fell towards the end of their innings.

20th over: WICKET: Wright to finish the innings off. Should of been a run out as Somerset chase hard for one. Zander De Bruyn sweeps nicely for four but the next ball he sends the ball straight into the grateful hands of Liddle at long on, he walks for 13.

Somerset finish on 216/7.

19th over: WICKET. Kirtley finds the off stump of Nick Compton with the first ball of the over and he walks off for 13. Phillips the new man. Good over from the fast right armer. Sussex will be happy to have limited them to this score given their start.

Somserset 206/6.

18th over: WICKET. Wright bowling, and he takes the wicket of Compton for 13. The batsman got it all wrong, top edging straight into the air and Wright made the catch look simple. Zander De Bruyn in to bat. Oh and Buttler is the latest man to be dropped, this time Ed Joyce guilty of putting it down running in from third man.

Somerset 200/5

17th over: Fast bowler Kirtley back to bowl. Couple of singles before Compton is dropped on 12. Goodwin did so well to sprint along the boundary and the crowd cheered as he seemed to pouch the high catch. But there's a groan as they realise he has put it down. Buttler finishes the over with a big six which beats the disparing dive of the man at long off.

16th over: WICKET. New man James Hildreth scores just the one before he steps out of his crease to a Monty delivery, misses and duly has his bails whipped off by Hodd. Jos Buttler the new man in.

Somerset 181/4.

15th over: WICKET. Just three singles from the first four balls. Big, big wicket. Trescothick sends a high one straight to Luke Wright at deep square leg. He's gone for 67.

Somerset 176 (Trescothick 67)

14th over: Wicket. Trego reaches 50 with a pushed single but then sends one straight down the throat of Chris Liddle, waiting on the boundary to give Monty a wicket.

Somerset 168/2 (Trescothick 66*)

13th over: Trego smashes a four and then successive sixes to move onto 50 already.

12th over: A few streaky singles start Monty's over as Sussex opt for spin from both ends. Trescothick sends another six flying well over the boards - Goodness this is monotimous!

Somerset 145/1 (Trescothick 60*, Trego 31*)

11th over: It's evasive action from everyone around the ground as Trego continues where Kieswetter left off, letting fly with three more fours to the leg side, finishing Yardy's over with another huge six, the seventh of the match already straight into the tennis courts.No-one's safe.

10th over: Monty Panesar brought on to bowl from the railway end. Lovely, inventive little flick over his head gives Trego his first boundary, quickly followed by his second, a crisp drive back down the wicket which races away on this extremely quick outfield.

116/1 (Trescothick 52, Compton 9*)

9th over: A single gives Trecothick his 50, coming from 26 balls and including eight fours and two sixes. Sharp fielding from Liddle leads to a run out opportunity, but new man Trego has scrambled to the crease in time.

8th over: WICKET. Wright is bludgeoned for four more from Kieswetter. A bouncer skips up and beats Hodd behind the wicket for four more, and then a full toss is punished with another six. But Kieswetter is gone, trying to go for another big six, Yardy taking a steepling catch on the boundary. Kieswetter gone for 45.

Somerset 104/1.

7th over: Sussex Skipper Yardy takes the ball to introduce some spin. Somerset take the two-over powerplay. Some very good fielding on the boundary makes it 3 off the over, by far Sussex's best.

6th over: Kieswetter again, a fourth six, a massive one which easily clears the boundary at long off. Trescothick's turn to launch one, this time it doesn't quite go for six, but his next does. He finishes with a cut through point and it thuds off the board for another four. 22 from the over.

Somerset 83/0 (Trecothick 37*, Kieswetter 36*).

5th over: End of the first powerplay and Sussex move men onto the boundary to counter this predictably explosive start. Couple of singles and then a shocker all-round. That was so wide, wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd did well to get a mit on the ball diving to his right, and then Monty completes the hash job with a sluggish attempt to stop the ball going for four. Kieswetter launches his third six straight over the third man and Somerset have made a lightning start.

4th over: Luke Wright on to bowl. Kieswetter with a big swash for four through mid on, then he goes one better with a big six to the same place.

Somerset 46/0.

3rd over: Kieswetter opens with a shot which bullets off his bat for six. A single and then a cut to the rope, another four and a miss field from Arafat, leading to another boundary makes it 21 from the over. Expensive stuff, Somerset taking advantage of the four over powerplay.

2nd over: Yasir Arafat bowling from the railway end. He twice beats the bat of Keiswetter before the batsman skies one into the air. Murray Goodwin is underneath it, the ball takes an age to drop and when it does the wet ball squirms out of his hands. Missed chance, and Trecothick instantly makes him pay with a straight drive down the wicket and a knock down the lef side, both of which race to the rope.

1st over: James Kirtley takes the first over duties bowling at Marcus Trescothick. Trecothick and Kieswetter trade singles before Trecothick just angles his bat to cut the last ball behind to the boundary rope. Six off the first over.

Sussex win the toss and choose to bowl. Somerset have a tasty looking opening pair of Marcus Trescothick and Craig Kieswetter will be no strangers to this 20 over format because of the rain delay.

RAIN DELAYS PLAY

PLAY DUE TO START AT 4.45pm (Match reduced to 20/20 match) - the players are warming up and the last of the covers is being removed. Subject to no more rain things are set to start very shortly...

The unoffical word here is we're looking at a 4.30pm start with the overs reduced to 22 instead of 40.

INSPECTION TO TAKE PLACE AT 4pm - There's been no significant rain for the last 30 minutes as the covers have been peeled off and the rollers have been racing around the outfield. They are hoping to get things going shortly but the match can't start if there's even a little bit of rain coming down...so collective fingers crossed please!

It's brightened up a bit here and the rain has turned to a mere drizzle, but the grounds staff recon it will take at least 40 minutes to get the ground ready so we're still a long way off.

We were due to start at 1.45pm but there's been pretty heavy rain here in Horsham for the last hour.

The covers are on and there's no sign when we'll get underway here at Cricketfield Road just yet.
