Sussex well on top on Day 1 at Horsham
End of day 1 First innings totals: Sussex 170/0 (Joyce 69*, Nash 81*) Derbyshire 242 all out (Durston 69, Adshead 49)
A HALF century from local lad Chris Nash has Sussex well on top against Derbyshire after Day 1 of their County Championship Div 2 match at Horsham.
Having bowled bottom side Derbyshire out for 242, openers Nash and Ed Joyce have put Sussex in a great position with a 150 partnership as they ended the day 170/0 in their first innings reply.
Nash will resume on 81 with Joyce on 69 for tomorrow's second day with both looking rock solid against some very inconsistent bowling. Ironically the only chance either batsman gave was in the last over when Nash edged between wicketkeeper and slips.
Earlier Derbyshire were in real trouble after the morning session at 97/6 but a century partnership between Wes Durston (69) and Steve Ashead (41), and a late 39 not out from Jones saw them at least post a half competitive score.
Monty Panesar and Yasir Arafat took three wickets each with two apiece for Corey Collymore and Luke Wright as the wickets were shared.
34th over: Last over of the day and Chris Nash is rather lucky to still be there after edging Durston behind but the ball flies between wicketkeeper and slips. Joyce finds a final boundary and that's it for day one folks!
31st over: 150 partnership. Nash chases hard for a single and there's the 150 partnership between this opening pair. Excellent stuff from Sussex. Derbyshire looking every inch a side at the foot of the table. Three overs left of the day's play.
Sussex 150 (Joyce 58*, Nash 73*).
23rd over: 50. Ed Joyce matches his partner's feat, dispatching Greg Smith's floaty full toss through the covers for four. His 50 is from 85 balls and included 10 fours. Good start from the openers out here, looking rock solid.
Sussex 127/0 (Joyce 53*, Nash 65*)
20th over: 50. Chris Nash reaches his half century, driving straight and helped by the Steffan Jones's rather dire attempt at extra cover to dive on the ball as it raced away for four. That's come from just 49 balls and includes 8 fours.
Sussex 110 (Joyce 45*, Nash 51*).
19th over: 100 partnership. Joyce slaps one down the off side and it rolls away to the rope. And that's the 100 partnership for the opening pair. A single off the last ball.
Sussex 101/0 (Joyce 42*, Nash 46*).
Just the first hint of rain here...a few spits and spats, nothing to overly worry about, although the same can't be said for the ominous clouds overhead.
14th over: Nash is really starting to go through the gears on his home ground. He stabbed one over the slips for four and the following ball confidently pulled one to the boundary at deep square leg. He just misses a little nibble at one on the off side but finishes a good over with a push and run for two.
Sussex 78/0 (Joyce 26*, Nash 40*).
12th over: Sussex have begun their first innings reply strongly with local Horsham opener Chris Nash and Ed Joyce looking in good nick. Joyce is 25 not out while Nash, who has picked up after a slowish start on 26 not out as Sussex are 65/0.
Tea: So that's the first innings over, Derbyshire end up with a decent total of 242 all out but Sussex will be confident of bettering that when their first innings gets underway shortly.
Afternoon session:
61st over: WICKET. And that's the end of Derbyshire's first innings. Mark Footitt the last man to go, Arafat sending his middle stump flying to pick up his third wicket of the day as Derbyshire finish on 242 all out.
57th over: WICKET. Panesar is brought back for another spell from the tennis club end and the legendary spinner claims his third wicket of the day with his second ball. Paul Borrington is the man out for 2, nervously stepping onto his back foot and edging behind to Joyce in the slips. That one turned pretty late. Just one more to get for Sussex.
Derbyshire 224/9. (Jones 19*, Mark Footitt 0*).
48th over: WICKET: Arafat strikes again to trap Adshead leg before just one short of his half century. That's two important wickets in as many overs and the momentum is back with Sussex. Steffan Jones the new man in.
(Derbyshire 199/8 Borrington 0*, Jones 0*).
46th over: WICKET. And it's a big one. Durston is gone for 69, Arafat taking out his middle stump with a yorker which caught the batmsman by complete surprise in what is his first over having been brought back for a second spell. Paul Borrington the new man in.
Derbyshire 198/7 (Adshead 48*, Borrington 0*)
41st over: Panesar brought back into bowl to stem the tide of runs. But Adshead and Durston are continuing to keep things ticking over for Derbyshire, playing sensible and not giving much away.
34th over: 50. Adshead gets his first boundary with a bit of a slap to the off side. Two balls later Durston sends the ball racing straight down the wicket. Arafat chases hard to prevent the boundary but the two runs is enough to give the right hander his 50 from 108 balls.
Derbyshire 133/6 (Durston 50*, Adshead 7*)
33rd over: Durston takes 11 from the over with two controlled strokes to the boundary, Derbyshire fighting back here.
31st over: Durston is lucky, flicking one just out of the reach of Rayner at third slip and it runs away for four off Wright. Monty lets one through his legs, not the best piece of fielding there as Derbyshire run up two and make a decent start to the session. Corey Collymore brought in to bowl in partnership with Wright.
Derbyshire 114/6.
30th over: Monty Panesar gets play back underway bowling from tennis court end, a slightly short one is put away for four by Steve Adshead as he gets off the mark and gives the Crickefield Road crowd a rare sight - a derbyshire boundary as they pass 100. Luke Wright will bowl from the other end.
Derbyshire 108/6.
Morning session:
LUNCH Day 1 - SUSSEX are well on top having dominated the first session on day 1 of their County Championship Div 2 match with Derbyshire at Horsham.
Derbyshire - missing star player Chris Rogers to tonsilitis after resigning the captaincy yesterday - won the toss and opted to bat, a decision they will be rueing having lost six wickets already.
Corey Collymore helped himself to two early wickets to trap both Wayne Madsen and Chesney Hughes (20) leg before.
Luke Wright and wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd combined to have Greg Smith and Dan Redfern caught behind before Monty Panesar came in to also take two wickets.
Robin Peterson gave away a simple catch having made a good start of 20 and Jonathan Clare edged behind just before the interval to leave the bottom side reeling on 97/6 at lunch. Only Durston has hung around and is currently at the crease on 23 not out having come in at number three.
There's a big crowd here at Cricketfield Road for the early stages and so far the rain has held off.
Roger's absence was such a late one that his replacement Paul Borrington is currently on his way down from Derby to the ground. It remains to be seen if he will make it before his side are bowled out.
26th over: WICKET. It's getting worse for Derbyshire, Clare caught behind by Hodd for a duck. That's Monty's second wicket, it kept pretty low and may of just turned at the last minute drawing a little outside edge. Clare faced a fair few balls but he can't contribute and Derbyshire are in real danger of collapsing here. Steve Adshead the new batsman.
Derbyshire 96/6 (Durston 26*, Adshead 0*).
22nd over: WICKET. Having made a decent start Peterson gifts a catch to Ollie Rayner off the bowling of Panesar. He bent his back and popped the simplist of catches to the fielder at mid wicket from the last ball of the over. Clare comes in and Arafat is brought on to bowl in place of Wright.
Derbyshire 95/5 (Durston 21*, Clare 0*).
21st over: Robin Peterson with a couple of boundaries off Wright. He drove a straight one past Panesar at Mid off from the centre of his bat and the next ball pulled it to the rope to get on the board quickly. Derbyshire will need these two to hang around.
Derbyshire 94/4 (Durston 20*, Peterson 20*).
19th over: WICKET. Another one for the Wright-Hodd combination and new man Dan Redfern is back in the hutch for a big fat 0. Like the man before him he tickled behind. Spinner Monty Panesar on to bowl at the other end, so it's him and Wright on for Sussex.
Derbyshire 70/4. (Durston 19*, Peterson 0*).
17th over: WICKET. Derbyshire's stand-in skipper Greg Smith is gone for 9. He feathered Luke Wright's perfect delivery behind and wicketkeeper Andrew Hodd pounched the catch. He never really looked safe against Wright or Collymore, it's looking good so far for Sussex.
Derbyshire 61/3 (Durston 11*, Redfern 0*).
13th over. Bowling change. Luke Wright replaces Arafat from the railway end. A swing and a miss from new batsman Smith before he sends a steady drive through the covers to four, but that's all they take from Wright's first over. Derbyshire 48/2 (Durston 11*, Smith 4*).
12th over: WICKET. And it's a big one too. Chesney Hughes, who was just starting to look dangerous steps into a striaght one from Collymore and is duly given leg before. The left hander goes for 15 and Collymore has a second wicket of the morning. Greg Smith comes in. Derbyshire 44/2.
Opener C Hughes found Derbyshire's first boundary in the sixth over before smashing Yasir Arafat for a huge six. He has just survived a couple of half-hearted lbw appeals from Arafat. Decent start for Sussex though.
Derbyshire 39/1 after 9 overs (Hughes 19*, Durston 7*).
Sussex were convinced they had another wicket, Madsen's replacement seemingly tickled a Collymore delivery to the slips but with Sussex celebrating umpire JW Lloyds kept his hands in his pockets.
With eight overs gone they are 29/1, W Madsen caught lbw by Corey Collymore in the fourth over having survived a similar shout to Yasir Arafat off the very first ball of the match.
