MOST football team managers will find the recent cold snap and snowfall a significant hindrance - but not Steyning Town boss Richard Whittington.
In fact, Whittington reckons it could benefit his side after punishing schedule of matches from week one of the 2011-12 County League Division 2 campaign.
Like all the County League games last weekend, Town’s trip to relegation rivals Little Common was called off because of a frozen pitch.
Steyning had lost their two previous games to fellow strugglers Midhurst and Oakwood and Whittington believes the break in the fixture list came at just the right time for his players.
He said: “We had looked tired and jaded in the previous two games, both physically and mentally, so I think having a weekend off is good for us. It will help us to forget about the two disappointing defeats and start afresh.
“We have not had a break since the season started, the fixture list has been relentless, and we have played more games than most other teams.
“You always want to play as many games as you can because we all love matchdays but, sooner or later, it catches up with you. Everyone needs a rest from time to time so hopefully the break will do us some good.”
Town, 13th in Division 2, have just seven games remaining this season, starting with a trip to Bexhill United this weekend, and have a tough run-in.
They face four of the top six sides, including away games against runaway leaders East Preston and second-placed Hailsham, as well as crucial relegation clashes against Little Common and Seaford.
Whittington said: “We have some very difficult games coming up but that doesn’t faze us at all. Our best performances this season have been against some of the top sides so we will go into those games with nothing to fear.
“We always go into every game believing we can win and I wouldn’t be surprised if we cause an upset or two before the end of the season.”
Whittington has a full squad to choose from this weekend following the return of striker Dave Francis from a chest infection.
