Young Horsham rugby sides in action

Horsham’s under-16s produced a thrilling display against rivals Chichester to pick up a crucial win on Sunday.

Perhaps inspired by the visiting Harlequins players, the two teams served up a feast of adventurous rugby, and with third placed Chichester one spot above Horsham in the Sussex A League, there was plenty at stake in front of a large crowd.

Winger Liam McGivern twice went close to scoring before the pressure told when, from a penalty ten metres out Sean Richardson powered over the line.

Chichester reduced the lead at the break with a penalty, but after half time Horsham stepped up a gear to play some outstanding attacking rugby.

Winger Declan Nwachukwu broke through to score Horsham’s second, and after McGivern was rewarded for his endeavour with a try Nwachukwu finished off a slick backs move for his second.

Nwachukwu went on to complete his hat-trick with the try of the match and seal a bonus point, and though Chichester finished with two late tries Horsham ran out deserved 27-13 victors.

Horsham’s Under-15s were also in action on Sunday, missing out in a tight 15-12 Sussex A League defeat to East Grinstead.

Tries came from Alex Clery and Justin Dzomekhu gave Horsham the lead at half time, but a much sharper East Grinstead came back to narrowly steal victory.
