Horsham RUFC under-15s ran out comfortable 38-10 winners against Hove as George Palmer scored a hat trick of tries in their season opener.
The young Green and Whites did produce some attractive passages of play, but that was countered by conceding more than 20 penalties. A powerful Hove side forced Horsham on to the back foot at times, but tries from James Tandy and George Palmer, both converted by Callum Boswell gave them a 14-10 half time lead.
A bright start to the second half followed as captain Paul Schroter led from the front, as strong attacking play was rewarded with another George Palmer try, converted by Callum Boswell. The best try of the match came next. After three phases of penetrating attacking play, Nathan Kennell went over close to the posts.
Horsham’s pack had now tamed the Hove forwards, achieving superiority in the scrummage, line out and rucks. Justin Dzomeku came on and caught the eye, but too many penalties were being conceded though to enable Horsham to press home maximum advantage.
There were however further tries from Tandy and Palmer before the close.
Pulborough warmed up for the season with a 27-21 friendly defeat of Hove.
An early converted try saw Boro trail, but when Ciaran Keating scooted over, Eddie Miller followed him with a 28th minute try. Pulborough then started to move through the gears as debutant Sol Deller scored a brace, one of which was converted by George Lee as the home side took a 22-7 advantage. Hove made it interesting with two converted tries, before Lee’s perfectly weighted kick allowed Eddie Miller to touch down.
