Westoby seals tense Holbrook win

Holbrook's Nick Holt

Holbrook's Nick Holt

Holbrook RFC secured a second straight win with a tense defeat of Brighton seconds in Sussex 1, as Glenn Westoby’s late try sealed the points.

In front of a lively home crowd, Holbrook made a fast start when sustained pressure from the pack saw the ball spun wide from an attacking scrum and a stretching Nick Holt scored the first try of the day.

A rampant Holbrook pack then took control straight from the kick off, earning a penalty which Matt Sprigge converted for an 8-0 advantage.

Brighton finally got a foothold in the game though, and hit back through their winger, who dotted down in the corner for a converted try, cutting Holbrook’s lead to one point.

That Brighton purple patch did not last long though as good interplay in the backs resulted in a try for prop Joe Barney - Sprigge converted for a 15-7 lead.

In a tight and fiercely contested second half, defences cancelled each other out and scoring opportunities were at a premium.

But with ten minutes to play, Brighton left the match in the balance with a try in the corner, which cut the lead back to three points.

Holbrook then went back to the tactics which put them in front, with forwards talking control with a number of pick and drives.

And wen the ball was whipped out on to the blind side, Holt evaded two tackles before offloading to Westoby to settle the match.
