PULBOROUGH’S hopes of clinching second spot and a play-off place in rugby’s Sussex Division 1 are over after they were subjected to a points deduction.
The Black and Whites were punished for fielding an unregistered player, so despite a handsome 31-18 defeat of Eastbourne III on Saturday - remain on 63 points and out of the running. Holbrook currently lead the chase for second on 69 points, with Burgess Hill and Hastings both on 68 as the season reaches a climax.
Complications over the players’ dual passport meant he was recorded as unregistered, even though he has been at the club since the age of 13.
Coach Phil Jennings said: “It’s partly our fault, and it looks as if we have played a ringer. “It blows the chance of finishing second for us.”
