Holbrook Rugby Club bowed out of the Sussex Shield after a mauling at the hands of a sprightly Brighton University.
Last season’s finalists were keen on success in the Shield this year, but the sheer pace and organisation of Brighton Uni’s backs put paid to that in a 36-7 defeat.
Lee Taylor scored Holbrook’s solitary try when he won the race to a kick through after a loose Uni pass, Matt Sprigg converted.
Captain paul Davey said: “We had high hopes of another cup run this season and it was disappointing to go out. They had a very good side and two very fast wingers.
“Their backs were the best we have faced this season.”
