A hugely competitive opening game of the season went Cranleigh’s way as the came from behind to beat Streatham and Croydon 22-15 at Wildwood Lane.
Cranes set the pace early on and scored the game’s opening try when their ever-improving lineout set up a catch and drive maul for Jake Shayler to cross the line. The momentum though swung and Stretham scored twice before half time, though a Curtis Beacroft penalty cut the visitors’ lead to 12-8 at the break.
Bot sides continued to cancel each other out at the resumption, Aaron Beacroft and Mark Brett with some crucial tackles, before Pete Barraud finished off a patient team move to put Cranleigh ahead, Beacroft with the conversion.
Streatham levelled with a controversial penalty, though a textbook catch and drive saw Jason Quick crash over and captain Phil Moore’s kick secured the win.
