HORSHAM Rugby Club have been given 14 days to appeal the decision to strip them of the Sussex Vase.
The Sussex RFU awarded the Vase to Hove Volunteers after it was ruled the Horsham Lions team had fielded ineligible players in the final last month. Horsham had won the final 27-7, but following a complaint from Hove, an investigation began. The Vase competition is for non-first XV teams to compete in.
Ken Nichols, competitions secretary of the Sussex RFU, said: “Horsham played a couple of players who had played in a higher cup competition.
“Their stance is that because it was an RFU competition and not a Sussex competition it should not make any difference. The regulations are clear.”
Section 3 of the Sussex RFU Club and team Knockout regulations states: ‘Players in teams below First XV should be restricted to those regularly appearing for that team, or a lower one, and a player who has played in a higher KO competition during the current season may not play for a lower side in a lower KO competition.’
