HOLBROOK RFC can hold their heads high after a rousing display in their first Sussex cup final.
In a fitting way to mark the club’s 40th anniversary celebrations, Holbrook lined up against Hastings & Bexhill in the Sussex Shield final, and although the Sussex 1 side faded in the second half on their way to a 31-17 loss, earned plaudits for their passion and determination. Three of the club’s founding members were among a crowd of around 300 watching on the touchline at Horsham’s Coolhurst ground; club president and Sussex Rugby stalwart, Brian Lewis; club treasurer Dick Simmons and Harvey Jones, all of whom played in Holbrook’s first match in 1971.
Holbrook’s Simon Ley said: “I think there were some nerves which came from being in our first ever final but possibly from every player wanting so desperately to win, and it took us ten minutes to get into it.
“But every single one of us played with real heart and passion.”
