Holbrook RFC travelled to Burgess Hill full of confidence despite the opposition’s loftier league position but left disappointed after a narrow defeat in Sussex Division 1.

In difficult weather conditions, running rugby was almost out of the question, to the match was dominated by defence.

Holbrook had the upper hand in the first half, putting the Sussex All Blacks under pressure, but found their hosts resilient.

Jamie Boon and Nick Holt combined well, with some deft kicks and support play, although Holbrook could not force their way over the line, and they were punished towards the end of the half when a Hill excursion into Holbrook territory saw them rewarded with a converted penalty.

Injuries blighted the second half, and after Holbrook lost prop Matt Dawson, Hill gained the ascendancy. The hosts’ fly half then laid on the game deciding try, evading several tackles before a neat off-load.
