Horsham RUFC Under-13s’ promising start to the Sussex league 1 season was maintained with a superb defeat of a determined East Grinstead.

The young Green and Whites were rewarded for some clinical rugby in a 40-17 scoreline.

And it was a good start, as after seeing several attacks thwarted by the visitors’ ferocious tackling, Horsham finally crossed the try line to settle the players’ early jitters.

However, East Grinstead responded immediately with a try of their own in the corner.

The frustration caused by a string of uncharacteristic errors eventually galvanized the Horsham players, who went back on the offensive, and were rewarded for their efforts with two further tries.

With a comfortable lead as the second half began, the ‘Rhinos’ fought to assert themselves in the scrum and at the breakdown. Their lead was extended through the clever orchestration of man of the match Jack Penny, the surging runs of utility player Vince Everitt, who snatched a hat-trick on the day, and the deft place kicking of captain Joseph Blake (who converted five of the team’s six tries). The visitors were in no mood to give up, though, and touched down twice more before the final whistle, narrowly missing out on a losing bonus point.

Following the match, Horsham’s assistant head coach Andy Brock said: “They came with the intention of winning and gave us a really good game, just what we needed.”

Redingensians are next up in a friendly.
