Video: ‘Leagues aren’t won at Christmas’, hockey captain warns

Horsham men’s hockey captain Duncan Howarth has warned his high-flying squad only half the job has been done.

Howarth’s side go into the Christmas break five points clear at the top of the Kent/Sussex 1 league after a hard-fought 3-1 win away at Marden Russets on Saturday.

Horsham have won ten of their 11 league games so far, only dropping points away at Tunbridge Wells.

But having narrowly missed out on the club’s burning ambition for promotion in the last two seasons their skipper is taking nothing for granted.

He said: “It’s lovely that we’ve got a five point cushion but leagues aren’t won at Christmas.

“We have to make sure we start again from scratch after this break, nothing is in the bag and we have to treat each game with the respect it deserves as we have so far.”

And Howarth, who took over as captain at the start of the season, has challenged his players to find even more in the tank.

“Every game is another building block towards something we hope will be big at the end of the season.

“We have to match what we’ve done so far and I’ll ask everyone to look at themselves and ask if they can give even more.

“Our objection for the season is promotion but it doesn’t stop there. Above all we want to be a learning team which is continually improving, so if we do gain promotion we won’t be starting again in a higher league, we’ll be ready to compete.”

Against a potential banana skin away at Marden Russets on Saturday Howarth described the display as “professional rather than vintage”.

Goals from himself, Johnny Dale and man of the match John Kimberley got the job done in what was a physical encounter to round off the first half of the season.
