Organisers of the Alf Shrubb Memorial Five Mile race say the top prizes are now anyone’s to win after last weekend’s cancellation.
A waterlogged course after heavy rain on Friday night meant event organiser Cliff Comber was forced to reschedule last Sunday’s race for Sunday October 21 at 11am.
Many of the elite runners due to take part, including leading Sussex athlete James Baker, and Nathan Shrubb, a distant relative of Slinfold’s legendary multiple record holder Alf are otherwise engaged in other races, so that leaves the field wide open.
Cliff said: “It was extremely disappointing.
“The river is usually insignificant, but it bursts is banks around four times a year.
“I could not even mark the course out on Saturday, if it was being held on the Saturday it would have been a disaster.
It gives the other runners a chance now some of the top athletes are not in it,” he added. “I have a feeling it will be a smaller field and I am taking a chance that it (the weather) will be alright.”
Entry costs £8 and all finishers will receive a medal, while category winners will be given a replica of Shrubb’s 1902 world record three mile medal.
