Current and ten times club champion Andy Main showed he is still the man to beat at Mannings Heath as he overpowered a strong field to retain the President's Cup in the 36-hole Spring Meeting.

His opening 74 on Saturday saw him trailing Colin Gibson by a stroke, but a level-par 72 off the gold tees on Sunday, saw him finish six shots clear of Steve Wright and Elliott Webster to clinch the scratch trophy.

Competition for the nett trophy was a much closer affair with Bradley Curtis beating Nigel Ingram on countback thanks to a superb second-round 68 after both men, playing off 13, had posted an aggregate 141.

The Jimmy Trophy for those not contesting the Spring Meeting was also decided on countback, Matt Dean’s 38 points off two just shading Mike Coombs off 21.

On Bank Holiday Monday in a mixed competition for Enid’s Urn, pairs had to negotiate six holes of better-ball, greensomes and foursomes.

Richard and Mina Burton claimed the trophy with an impressive 40 points with Peter Catchpole and Doreen Dinnage beating Nigel Evans and Margaret Brown on countback with 38 for the runner-up berth.

Brown made sure of a nearest-the-pin prize by holing her tee shot on the 10th.

The ladies’ staged a qualifying competition for the Peugeot Coronation Foursomes where the winners earn a spot in the Ricoh British Women’s Open Pro-Am.

Only one point separated the top three pairs with Lynne Jones and Minah Burton carding 75 and Jen Cole and Emma Francis beating Marion Gibson and Gerry Wyatt on countback with 76.

Two of Heath’s men’s teams made progress in county competitions. The scratch squad beat Hassocks 8-4 at home to reach the third round of the Optimus Trophy and the over-55s team secured a 3-1 away win at Worthing in the Cyril Blake Foursomes.
