Rising judo star Patrick Kimber enhanced his growing reputation with a gold medal in Ireland, on his Great Britain debut.

The 15-year-old Southwater judoka Patrick won gold in his division at the Irish Open Special Needs Event in Dublin last weekend, but needs sponsorship to further develop his career by attending more events on the continent.

Patrick, who has cerebral palsy, is unable to use his legs for throwing his opponents, so is restricted to competing on the ground only.

In Dublin as part of a ten strong British Judo Association Special Needs squad, he claimed two Ippons (maximum point wins) and a Wazari (seven points) to come out on top of his group.

Derek Paxton, Patrick’s coach at Southwater Judo Club, said the need to compete on the ground can work in his charge’s favour.

“We are very proud of what he has done,” Derek said. “He did not show a great deal of nerves and coped well with everything which was thrown at him.

“Because he fights from a kneeling position it is an advantage for him because his opponents have to adjust their judo to suit him.”

Patrick wants to compete at the highest possible level although the Paralympics is ruled out as that features just blind and partially sighted judokas. At present, the top special needs judo events are held in The Netherlands, where Patrick hopes to compete next spring, but whatever financial backing the British Judo Association and his school, Ingfield Manor can provide, he needs more. Derek added: “The number of events being orgainsed is increasing. If anyone could help this very special lad it would be tremendous.”
