Nic overcomes tricky conditions to lift Mannings Junior title

Just two points separated the top four finishers as tricky conditions and intermittant rain proved no obstacle in the Mannings Heath Junior Club Championship on Saturday.

It was eleven-handicap Nic Mathers who claimed the title thanks to a superb six-over-par 78 for 41 stableford points.

Hot on his heels a point behind was Order of Merit leader Elliott Webster, playing off four, whose level par 72 included four birdies. Third was eighteen-handicap George Atkinson, just shading Jack Holmwood on a back six countback after both signed for 39.

The ladies section, playing two days earlier, found the heavy going much tougher with only Silver Division leader Rita Searles playing to her handicap for a hard-won 37 points. Nearest challengers Sam Barnes and Lyn Turner were four behind. Junior Anna Sowerby was best of the Bronze scorers with 28, one better than Marion Gibson and two clear of Pat Griffiths.

Meanwhile, despite wins for the Owen Hydes/Mike Dimon and Gerry Woods/Peter Ireland pairings, Heath’s seniors went down to a narrow 3-2 away defeat at Wildwood in the Claws Winter League.
