New Mannings captains tee-off in style
Mannings Heath Golf Club’s new set of captains drove themselves in on Sunday, as John Harvie, Mel Gunn, Luke Bennett and Joy Reineck hit ceremonial first tee-shots.
And new men’s captain Harvie led the way in style, with a 220 yard drive which split the fairway, followed by senior skipper Gunn, junior captain Bennett and leading lady Reineck.
Outgoing captain Geoff Lodge had raised more than £7,000 for the Springboard project whose manager Nigel Scott-Dickson received the cheque from retiring ladies’ captain Lynne Jones - Harvie’s chosen charity this year will be Chestnut Tree House hospice.
The ceremony capped a busy week on rain-soaked fairways. Peter Ireland carded a battling 38 stableford points to retain the Geoffrey Walker ahead of six-handicapper Phill Davies, whose 75 was the best gross round of the day and pipped Dave Cocker into third on countback after both signed for 37 points.
Ireland, Davies and Cocker then joined forces in their Claws Winter League debut, where Mannings lost 3½–1½ to Slinfold.
On the Waterfall Course, Lesley-Anne Collins-Powell took advantage of a rule allowing players to score double points on odd or even holes - she posted 55 points in the Silver Division, ahead of Sandra Roberts, who beat Reineck into third on countback after both scored 46. It was tough going in the Bronze Division, as 35 points was enough for Pat Griffiths to win, followed by Joan Mahoney and Sue Crane, both on 33.
And on Saturday, 34 of the top 50 Order of Merit finishers competed for the Tom Anderson Cup, won by Colin Gibson’s nett 64, six shots clear of Comac Whelan.
