Manvell masters Mannings’ frozen fairways

FROZEN fairways and greens proved as much a test of patience as skill for golfers at Mannings Heath in Saturday’s stableford.

Only a handful of hardy souls took on the challenge of marking a card with 17-handicap Nigel Manvell posting the best of them, 36 points, to beat his nearest Division Two challenger John Gleaves by five.

Paul Gardner, playing off six, headed Division One with 30 points.

Heath’s Ladies also found themselves at the mercy of the conditions, for their fun competition a few days earlier with each competitor nominating three holes before their round which would count for double points. Pat Etheridge led the Silver Division with 39 followed by Mina Burton, 37, and Sandra Roberts, 35. Viv Reed topped the Bronze scorers with 35, three ahead of Eleanor Wilkin and four better than Joyce Watson.
