Horsham’s Dan inspires
DANIEL Pound was the star performer for Sussex cadets as he inspired a title winning run at the English County Premier Division Championships.
The Horsham Table Tennis Club member overcame some highly rated opposition in a second title success for Sussex under-15s.
First up, Sussex faced Lincolnshire, who boasted a talented squad, including England under-13 number two Tom Jarvis.
Sussex won 9-1 with two impressive wins from the young Horsham star, who beat both William Ross (no.20 In England) and Matthew Leete (no.28 in England) 3-0.
Cleveland were dismissed 7-3 in the next fixture, and Sussex then made light work of Yorkshire with a 9-1 winners with another impressive 3-0 win for Pound, against James Hobson (no. 24 in England).
After day one, Sussex were sitting top with their great rivals Middlesex second after having lost to Lincolnshire, but wins would still be needed during the second day.
And Sussex delivered; with 10-0, 9-1 and 9-1 victories against Gloucestershire, Glamorgan and Staffordshire respectively. The last match of the day was against Middlesex whose team included Tin Tin Ho, ranked no.4 in Europe for her age. In a very close fought match Sussex drew 5-5 to clinch the title after a nail biting deuce in the fifth set win by Jack Bennett against Gabriel Achampong.
