Ladies Singles winner Jean Meinertzhagen

Southwater Bowls Club handed out their annual awards last week.

President Rob Ayling presented trophies to this year’s winners at Southwater’s Annual Dinner and Trophy Presentation Evening at Horsham District Indoor Bowls Club.

Jean Meinertzhagen (ladies singles); Michael Allmond (men’s singles); Tony Woodard and John Coghlan (George Henry Ford Cup); Kath Bennett, Geoff Everard and Michael Allmond (Triples Cup); John Coghlan and Michael Allmond (John Rowland Memorial Cup -100 up); John Coghlan (2 Wood Singles); Lila Dawes and John Coghlan (2 Wood pairs metre stick); Beryl Simmons, Sonia Leake, Brian Barnes and Brian French (drawn fours shield); Sonia Leake (Walter Simmons Memorial Cup); Michael Allmond and Tony Male (Harris Memorial Trophy).

Short mat honours were also presented, with the winners: Beryl Simmons (ladies’ singles); Tony Woodard (men’s singles); Ruth Cocoran (ladies singles plate); Brian Barnes (men’s singles plate); Tony Woodard and Don Puttock (pairs cup); Enid French, Marie Rendell and John Bonwick (The Treasurer’s Cup); Beryl Simmons, Cyril Napper and Sheila Bonwick (drawn triples).

The last trophy to be presented was The Van Cuylenburg Shield which is given to a non committee member who has made a great overall contribution to the club throughout the year.

This year it went to Alan Baker, who does so much work in all areas enabling the club to function smoothly.

Short Mat Bowls: The Martlets recorded a maxium 6-0 victory against Bognor in their latest West Sussex County League Division 1 fixture. The Billingshurst-based club were led to victory by Colin Groome, Chris Blackman, Jack Rollings and Malcolm Rollings (22-10), while Barrie Fitch, Marion Rolph, Chris Rolph and Marc Lancaster finished +11.

Indoor bowls: Horsham IBC were dominant against Mote Park. Top rink of D Bunday, J Robins, M Porter and skip P Thomas cruised to a 30-11 win in the 141-87 friendly victory. Meanwhile, Horsham beat King Alfred by 21 shots in the Egham Trophy.Roy Pretty, Ronnie Pickering, Tony Hazell and Dorothy Armstrong led the way following a Denny Cup loss to Wey Valley.
