Hockey ladies must take indoor form on to stave off relegation

RELEGATION threatened Horsham ladies hockey team must treat every game until the end of the season like a cup final if they are to survive in the National Conference East.

This season has been a struggle for Warren Gilmour’s side, and they have been in the lower reaches of the Investec Hockey League’s second tier since the first pushback. And after the mid-season break comes to an end, Horsham return to action buoyed by their indoor season performances, in which they won promotion to Division 1 of the National League.

On Saturday, Horsham visit Old Loughtonians, who are second bottom of the division, in an old fashioned six-pointer.

“It does not matter how we get them, it is all about results now,” Gilmour said. “This weekend is massive. “We try and play a certain way, play flowing hockey and pass it around and we will approach the game that way. We are prepared to play badly and win 1-0 though, it’s basically about getting three points. Every game is a cup final now for us until the last game of the season.”

Eleven of the 14-strong squad featured in Horsham’s successful indoor campaign, while Emma Whipps has replaced Siobhan Henn as captain.

Gilmour added: “The confidence is high at the moment.”
