Sussex athletics stalwart Keith May has revealed his shock at being given national recognition for his work

Keith, an ever-present figure in Sussex athletics since joining Horsham Blue Star Harriers as an athlete some 48 years ago received the ervice to Athletics award at the England Athletics awards evening. He said: “It was a big surprise, I was shocked to win the regional award so it was a real surprise when my name was read out at the nationals.

“It’s a very nice honour to win the award but to be honest there’s thousands of volunteers in sport who deserve it as much as, if not more than me.

“It’s my name on the award but I like to see it as recognition for all the volunteers who have given up their time over the years to help athletics in Sussex.

“I took up athletics as a sport 48 years ago for the same reason I am still involved in it, because I love the sport. I do it because I enjoy it, it’s a hobby and as long as I’m fit and healthy and still enjoying it I’ll continue.”

Keith was given the prestigious honour at the England Athletics awards night on Saturday, attended by a host of Olympians past and present.
