Horsham Blue Star Harriers athletes tackled mud splattered conditions in the latest of the Sussex Cross Country league events at Plumpton College.

Not only was the course very testing but the incessant rain made conditions very miserable for not only the runners, but also for the team managers, officials, marshals and spectators.

However, the club athletes put up some good performances.

In the Senior Men’s race, where a field of 170 faced the starter, Adrian Fautly again had an excellent run finishing in 21st position in 32 minutes 29 seconds which placed him third of the under-20s.

Francis Scarr was not far behind in 28th place running 32m58s for fourth Under-20. The scoring team was made up of Alex Best, in his first run over the country for several seasons, taking 42nd place and Ryan Bowyer in 71st place. This put the team in third place on the day and moved the team into third place overall in their division after two races.

In the Senior Women’s race Cammi Cowan was the first Blue Star finisher in 11th running 22m5s, a fine achievement after her shoe was sucked off by the mud whilst lying in third place. Rebecca Adams had another solid run in 22nd place (22m38s) and she was closely followed by Nicole Allen who took 25th place just 19 seconds behind.

Maisie Boast continues to improve and she made up the team in 61st place (26m23s). The team finished sixth on the day and moved up to sixth overall.

In the younger age groups Neave Scott finished 12th in the under 13 girls race with Tabitha Hammant and Romy van der Veen making up the team that finished eighth. The under 13 boys race saw Connor Dearden have a good run to finish in 11th place and with Jamie Hughes 16th and Oliver Perrin 25th the team took sixth place. In the under 15 age group races Rebecca Williams finished 12th in the girls race and Jack Milnthorpe 15th in the boys event.

The under 17 men’s race saw Daniel Eeles and Ben Collier have a fine tussle with the former finishing in 15th, eight seconds ahead. The team, which finished in fifth place, was made up by Will Thomas in 20th.
