basketball: Hawks off to a flyer

Horsham Hawks soared to a 72-40 defeat of Haywards Heath Eagles in their season opener.

Ethan Belfield got the Hawks off to a good start with an explosive drive into the key, and further baskets came from Jacob Larbey (17 points) and Max Dodd (10 points), but despite the good start it took a change of pace for the Hawks to open up a 14 point lead at the end of the first quarter. Matt Williamson and Tim Curtis added second quarter points, as Owen Wyeth and Matt Fuller helped inspire them to a 41-22 half time lead.

The Eagles came on strong in the second half, but Nick Hutchinson was solid in defence.

The final quarter began with the Hawks 50 - 32 up and playing some simple but effective basketball. It was to swing even further in their favour with their continual pressure finally paying off for Wyeth as he scored his first Hawks basket and with Fuller’s final 2 points wrapping up an impressive victory.

“It’s a promising start and it’s great to see that the whole squad got on the score sheet’ said assistant coach Will Belfield. “If we can continue to work hard and build on the principles we have in place we can look forward to a successful season.”
