Barns Green Half Marathon moved to avoid clash

Christ's Hospital's marching band will perform at the Barns Green Half Marathon

THIS year’s Barns Green Half Marathon will be staged a month earlier than usual in a bid to attract more entrants.

Organisers have scheduled this year’s race for Sunday September 30, as they hope to avoid a clash with the Great South Run, and stage the race in better weather conditions.

Last year’s run had more than 1,400 finishers, and the organising committee wants to see that number increase.

Meanwhile, this years runners will be treated to a performance from the Christ’s Hospital School Marching Band for the first time as they race through the school’s Qradrangle. Since the race began in 1982, this unique village occasion has raised a huge amount of money for charity, with more than £10,000 distributed to various charities, groups, youth and sports clubs in and around the village from the 2011 race.

Race Director, Vernon Jennings commented, “I am very excited about the change of date and would like to thank everyone who has been so accommodating and especially Christ’s Hospital School.

Another new initiative for 2012 will be the introduction of Barns Green junior/fun run races for younger runners.
