Young Horsham athletes lose out to Crawley in Sportshall League opener

Horsham Blue Star Harriers two teams were just edged into second place in the opening fixture of the Sussex Sportshall League at Tanbridge house last week.

More than 70 young athletes from the Horsham club competed - both boys and girls teams were pipped by Crawley AC.

Among the pick of the Blue Star performances, Ashley Gorton and Jack Milnthorpe posted identical times of 45.6seconds to win in the A and B strings of the under-15 four lap race.

In the same age group, Calum Neil was second in the standing long jump with a leap of 2.51metres and the vertical jump saw Joe West tops with 75cm, and Tom Mackman took the B string with 73cm.

In the under-13s, Sam Hughes won the four lap race and Josh Barnett won the speed bounce, elsewhere, under 11s Alfie Waring and Olly Courten were both second in the two lap races - their first Blue Star outing.

Esme Vale (2.26m) and Emma Garry (2.15m) recorded a double first in the under-15 girls standing long jump, while Emma was beaten into second on countback in the shot, Lucy Milnthorpe teamed with Esme to win the eight lap paarlauf, while Jade Lindo and Mia Frost recorded a double first in the under-13 vertical jump. And in the under-11s, Amy Dallas clocked 25.0s to win the two lap race.
