Southwater golfer Toby Tree produced a stunning fightback in his singles match on Tuesday, but could not prevent Europe slipping to overall defeat in the Junior Ryder Cup.

The United States lifted the trophy for a third successive time this week after a 14.5 - 9.5 win at Olympia Fields in Chicago.

Held just days before the top European pros take on America at Medinah, the biennial competition has helped launch the careers of European stars including Rory McIlroy, Sergio Garcia and Nicolas Colsaerts, who are part of Jose Maria Olazabal’s side for this weekend’s Ryder Cup.

Former England Boys under-14 and under-16 champion Tree picked-up a half in his foursomes match and lost in the fourballs before he recovered from four down to halve his singles against Cameron Champ.
