CATHY Downey and Karen Ashcroft will tee it up at former Ryder Cup venue Marriott Dalmahoy in the final of the Daily Mail Foursomes.
The Slinfold pair held off a late challenge from Hampshire club Stoneham to win on the 17th hole and book their place in the finals at the Edinburgh course.
After nine holes the match was all square and the Stoneham pair looked comfortable on Slinfold’s tight fairways and tricky greens. But the tide turned in Slinfold’s favour when Ashcroft pitched in from 40 yards on the long par four 12th hole to put them one up, and on the 17th they teed off two up, needing just a half to clinch the match. There were nervous moments when Ashcroft’s 160 yard six iron approach shot ran off the back off the back of the green, but a delicate chip back from Downey gave them two putts to win and victory was theirs.
Meanwhile, Clive Wright and Joe Sillett’s 6&5 win was the highlight of the men’s 5-1 defeat of Hill Barn. In the seniors pairs better ball medal Chris Davis and Viv Diggens carded a nett 62 to finish ahead of Joe Warden and Bob MacLean; Fred Lane and Phil Eggitt; and Mike Lowery and Gerry Street.
Finally, Karen Ashcroft gross 78 to win the Ladies Stableford with 39 points. three points clear of Diane King (22) on 36, with Sue Hall (17) third with 33points. For Slinfold, but particularly Karen, it was a weekend to remember.
