An exciting summer of sport is set for school children across the county as they compete in the Sainsbury’s School Games in Sussex on Thursday 10 July 2014.
Future sporting stars could be discovered at K2 Crawley, operated by Freedom Leisure, as the participants, aged 7-14, battle it out across a range of sports including Gymnastics, Athletics, Golf, Football & Disability Events.
Competitors, from each district in Sussex, will have already qualified from local area finals held throughout the year. Professional athlete Lesley Owusu - silver medallist at the 2002 Commonwealth Games - will cheer competitors on and present them with medals at the Olympic-style Closing Ceremony.
The Sainsbury’s School Games is backed by National Lottery funding from Sport England and headline sponsor Sainsbury’s, and delivered by the Youth Sport Trust.
Tara Hicks, Head of Sponsorship at Sainsbury’s said: ‘We are thrilled to be supporting our next generation of athletes at this year’s summer festivals. The festivals provide a fantastic opportunity to encourage even more young people to enjoy the benefits and challenges of competitive sport’.
The Sussex Games are delivered by a Local Organising Committee, consisting of Active Sussex, the Sussex School PE & Sport Network, National Governing Bodies, local authorities, leisure providers and headteachers. Active Sussex Gold Tier partners, Freedom Leisure and University of Chichester also support the event.
The Sussex event is one of more than 60 regional Sainsbury’s School Games festivals that are taking place across the country this summer, encouraging more young people to participate in competitive school sport.
