A single point was all that separated the top three pairs in Mannings Heath’s traditional Valentine’s Day competition on Sunday.

Perfect winter golfing weather and excellent greens helped yield several strong scores in the St Andrews greensomes format.

Mike Mullen and Meriel Jolley proved the day’s most-compatible couple as they used their combined 13 handicap to claim the Lewis Love Bowl with 39 points.

Hot on their heels with 38 were Paul Holmes and Mina Burton, who just shaded the runners-up spot on countback from Bill and Emma Francis.

Monday’s Seniors’ Texas Scramble saw only seven-tenths of a point covering the top three teams.

Bob Binning, Roy Boud, John Kear and John Elliott finished with a two-under-par 70 which netted down to 63.1 with their aggregated handicaps.

Peter Elliott, Ian Gibson and Paul Carter took second with nett 63.5 and Bob Dann, John Wills, Richard Pugh and Maurice Eastham were third with 63.8.
