Mannings Heath’s John Gleaves beat medal competition winners from all over Sussex to claim the Sussex Centenary Jug at Royal Eastbourne, and qualify for the England final.

Having qualified with Ed Roberts by winning his division of the club’s Centenary Medal in July, eighteen-handicap Gleaves overcame a tricky wind to card 37 points, two better than his nearest challenger, Tilgate Forest’s Ross Knowlson.

“I just tried to concentrate on keeping my ball under the wind”, he said afterwards. “But I never dreamed my score would be good enough to win.”

A big-hitter and fierce competitor, Gleaves has already won this year’s Order of Merit trophy at Mannings Heath for his consistent performances in club competitions. He will now represent Sussex in next year’s England Golf Gold Medal event over 36 holes at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire.
