BILLINGHURST’S Malcolm Rollings made an unexpected appearance at the English National Championship Bowls Finals, and went close to lifting the doubles title.

The captain of the Billingshurst-based Martlets Short Mat Bowls Club was drafted in as a substitute to partner Lavant’s Peter Whale in the West Sussex team after regular team member John Heasman was forced to pull out.

And the Rollings/Whale pairing proved so successful that they won through to the day’s final.

Knock-out victories over Oxfordshire, Derbyshire, another West Sussex qualifier and Cheshire at the semi finals stage saw them pitted against Shropshire’s England Internationals Nick Tideswell and Chris Williams. The Shropshire pair proved too good, and ran out 11-4 winners to take the title.

That runner’s up spot proved to be the best West Sussex result during the championships.
