GOALKEEPER Matt Armstrong-Ford has been told he can leave Horsham.
The 21-year-old was responsible for two costly errors in Tuesday’s 3-2 FA Cup exit to Burnham, and after manager Justin Luchford assessed the financial implications of the defeat, he decided Armstrong-Ford did not have a future at Gorings Mead.
He said: “Today I have released Matt Armstrong-Ford. However, not for the reasons that you may be thinking. I had banked a little on getting a result against Burnham on Tuesday night and getting some much needed income into the club. We didn’t win and so I have to look at the finances and Matt has had to make way as I need to look at things again. Today was one of the hardest phone calls I’ve ever had to make. To tell a young lad that I have to release him on the back of some bad form was not easy. A lad that gives everything, very professional and a pleasure to work with. A lad that a club like Exeter City felt that he might have what it takes to make a pro footballer. I personally wish Matt all the best and I hope one day our paths cross again. As for his form, no it hasn’t been great and that gets highlighted as a goalkeeper as they are the last line of defence but I know he will go on to be a very good ‘keeper.”
