HORSHAM Hockey Club men’s second XI have claimed a second successive promotion.
After topping Sussex Division 2 last season, Nigel Dean’s side can now look forward to playing in Division 2 of the Kent/Sussex Regional League next year after a 1-0 defeat of South Saxons wrapped up the Division 1 crown on Saturday.
Horsham won 20 of their 22 games, and the weekend’s result opened up an unassailable seven point advantage over Saxons, their nearest rivals.
Coach Dean said: “After last season’s success some other Sussex teams expressed their doubts that we were good enough to go up again. We proved them wrong.
“In all we played 22 games; won 20, scored 108 goals and conceded only 29. I think that says it all.”
The team is a blend of promising youngsters, such as leading goal-scorer Jack Dean, Dan Humphreys, Stephen Grout and Alex Masters and others with plenty of first team experience behind them - including David Perrie, Paddy Humphries, Sam McDonald, Dom Bradley, Andrew Ford, Andy Crake, Neil Brenson, James Smith and goalkeeper Nick Evans.
Fittingly, it was captain Dave Youngman who popped up to score the important winning goal in final match against South Saxons.
