HORSHAM Hockey Club’s young guns wrapped up victory early on against Herne Bay in a scintiliating start on Saturday.
After making the arduous journey to the Kent coast, John Burroughs’ men flew out of the traps and raced into a 3-0 lead, and although the discipline went out of the window for a while in the second half - Horsham only conceded twice and added one of their own.
Tom Anguige, Mark Humphreys, Calum Halloway and Dan Rhodes scored in the victory.
“It’s a long way to go, it’s much easier playing at home at 3pm then playing there,” Burroughs quipped.
“We had injuries and illness, but we have such strength in depth now that we pretty much had all bases covered and knew we could still go there with a strong side.
“After going 3-0 up, from our point of view it looked as if we were going to play some really good stuff and turn it into an exhibition.
“But it became an ugly game, ideally we would want to beat the weaker opposition by something like eight goals without getting involved in the nitty gritty.”
